A crucial component for an integrated and sustainable transportation system is combining public transport and freight logistics - Technische Universität Hamburg

Problem Statement

To create an integrated and sustainable transportation system, the combination of public transport and freight logistics is essential. Currently, automated buses and transport robots require human supervision due to legal and safety concerns. To optimize cross-modal resource use, autonomous functionalities need expansion and vehicle interoperability improvements.

Project Goal

The project’s aim is to implement a prototype control center for the efficient use of combined passenger and goods transport. Building on previous projects TaBuLa and TaBuLa-LOG, it leverages test routes, self-developed transport robots, and conventional buses. AI-based methods will be applied for optimal coordination and networking, with increased automation through technical advancements.

Project Approach

The transport robots are enhanced in hardware and software and supported by AI-based environment recognition. Testing occurs both in laboratory settings and real-world mixed traffic environments. The real test field demonstrates a use case where a transport robot receives a transport order from the control center and travels part of the route in a bus. The system’s scalability is investigated through simulation software.
